| | | | | | | | | REQUEST FOR COUNCIL AGENDA The City of Hartsville | Agenda Date: 3/8/2022 | To: City Council | From: City Manager |
Ordinance Number: Resolution Number: 03-22-02 - REGULAR MEETING | | | |
| | | | | | | |
ORDINANCE/RESOLUTION CAPTION: | Application for Police Department to receive approval to use the SLED Criminal Facial Recognition System |
| | | |
| | | | | | | |
BACKGROUND SUMMARY: | Surveillance equipment in businesses, homes, and public areas often capture images of persons involved in crimes. Identifying persons based on those images often depends on officers knowing the person or public help. SLED has a database of people who have been arrested, that we can use to try to identify persons involved in crimes. |
| | | |
| | | | | | | |
IMPACT IF DENIED: | Investigators will not have access to the full set of tools that exist which can help us solve common crimes where photographic information is available, such as robberies, shopliftings, thefts, burglaries, and assaults. |
| | | |
| | | | | | | |
IMPACT IF APPROVED: | Officers will gain another tool to assist with investigations and identification of persons involved in criminal activity |
| | | |
| | | | | | | |
FINANCIAL IMPACT: | The SLED database is free. The financial cost would be nothing. It may also have an indirect savings in man-hours required to investigate crimes. It may also help prevent false identifications. |
